Category clues are where Tic-Shaq-Toe becomes more than team memory. A category can ask for an award, a statistical skill, a playoff result, or a time period. The best answers are the ones you can connect to the category without guessing.
MVPUse confirmed MVPs first: Kareem, Jordan, LeBron, Magic, Bird, Duncan, Curry, Jokic, Antetokounmpo, Durant, Harden, Westbrook, Rose, and Embiid.
All-StarBuild by franchise era. This category is broad, but the wrong era can still trap you if the other clue is restrictive.
ChampionThink beyond Finals MVPs. Title rotations create useful answers like Robert Horry, Shane Battier, Steve Kerr, Shaun Livingston, and Bruce Bowen.
RebounderStart with bigs and forwards: Rodman, Duncan, Garnett, Barkley, Moses Malone, Dwight Howard, Drummond, and Gobert.
AssistPoint guards and offense-running wings matter: Magic, Stockton, Nash, Kidd, Chris Paul, Rondo, LeBron, Harden, and Westbrook.
Three-PointUse shooters by era: Curry, Klay, Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Kyle Korver, Peja Stojakovic, Steve Kerr, and Damian Lillard.
DefenseRemember guards, wings, and bigs: Payton, Pippen, Kawhi, Draymond, Gobert, Ben Wallace, Mutombo, Bowen, Smart, and Jrue Holiday.
2000sAnchor the decade with Shaq/Kobe Lakers, Duncan Spurs, Wade Heat, LeBron Cavaliers, Nash Suns, Dirk Mavericks, and Garnett Celtics.
2020sUse current-era anchors: Jokic, Giannis, Tatum, Luka Doncic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, Booker, Butler, Curry, and Embiid.
Separate reputation from qualification. A player can be remembered as a scorer without fitting a specific scoring clue, or remembered as a defender without matching the exact honor the board is asking for. When in doubt, choose an answer you can explain in one sentence.
It also helps to create category ladders. For a rebound clue, start with Hall of Fame bigs, then team-specific rebounders, then role players. For an assist clue, start with point guards, then playmaking wings, then short-stint veterans who connect to the team clue.
